When I share that it is possible to truly enjoy your college admissions journey, I typically get a look of utter disbelief. “Really, college admissions can be fun? All of those essays? The Common App? The single digit admission rates? This can be fun?!”
Yes! Emphatically, yes!
While there are certainly some more mundane tasks involved, the overall process of college planning includes plenty of fun.
For example, check out UChicago’s Essay prompts for next year’s applications.
As you can see, UChicago (the University of Chicago, a highly-selective private research school) believes there is space for fun. These questions are not your cookie-cutter, prop-your-eyes-open-because-you’re-falling-asleep essay questions.
In fact, they are so good that most years I have a hard time choosing a favorite prompt!
College planning is really a rare and beautiful opportunity. Your time as a high school student is coming to an end. For most of you, this will be the first time you have much of a say in what comes next. Can it be daunting? A little overwhelming? Of course. But those feelings aren’t what it’s all about.
With a little guidance and direction, you can move into feeling the excitement and energy in realizing your potential. You can discover schools that fit your interests and style. You can discover the fun in college admissions.
